Life in Minsk

One of theproblematic issues highlighted during the dinner was the lost continuity andconnection of history and time in Belarus. It seems to be a very strongnational feature there. It touches almost all areas we talked about during the dinner.For example, cultural heritage in Belarus.

Washingaway intellectual layers. People often either have to change their professionsor leave the country to be able to work.

We placed aquestion how can we contribute with our project and what would be the bestcontinuity of it in future. What can we do?

DINNER - PUBLIC SPACE

In theframes of the CityArtLab Minsk a series of dinners was held at Y Gallery. Manyprominent Belarussian artists, significant journalists, architects, designers,theatre workers and citizens of the city took part in the dinners. We discussedimportant subjects urgent for the city, for example, Public sphere in Minsk andLife in Minsk.

We foundout very important and problematic issues regarding life in Minsk and tried todefine certain ways for the change to come.

During thedinner devoted to the subject of the Public Sphere in Minsk. We made a recap ofthe underground art and performance art in public space in Minsk in the 1980s, 1990sand now. We looked at differences in possibilities and the character of artpresented in public space between the 80s and nowadays.

Wespecified key points of life in Minsk and art in public sphere. For example, avery interesting moment was to see that Soviet aesthetics are presented andcarefully preserved by the state today than it was in the 80s. For example, itrelates to such Soviet symbolics like stars, emblems, such shops as GUM (StateDepartment Store), TSUM (Central Department Store) etc. All consumption cultureis controlled by the state. There is a vivid propaganda of products made inBelarus and lack of imported goods. In Minsk you can dress as people weredressing at Soviet times, you can go and eat at the same places etc. During thedinner Belarus or Minsk were called “Soviet Sanctuary” and if we look at publicsphere from this point of view, many participants of the dinner proposed topreserve the country in this state as an artifact.

At about 4 PM ex-presidential candidate Vital Rymasheuski (right )was detained near his house in the Sukharava .Three unknown persons attacked him with no explanations at the front door of his house, threw him into a van and took him to the Frunze district police station. He noted that in the police station he was chained to the bench. In this state, he spent about four hours: "Everything happened in the same way as on 19 December last year. They detained me in the same way, did not introduce themselves again and thrown into the same van. The only thing that it wasn't that brutal - now they did not hit me on the head. Nothing else has changed. Thus the authorities show that a person can be arrested at any moment. "

20 dec: Preliminary information appeared about whereabouts of the Ukrainians, who disappeared in Belarus yesterday. As charter97.org website has learned, the girls managed to call their friends and say they were in the Yelsk district of the Homel region. They say they were beaten and left there. Their money and documents were seized.
The information was confirmed by the leader of the Ukrainian group, Anna Gutsol, who received a phone call from the girls. According to her, FEMEN activists were beaten and cut their hair. Their IDs were taken away.
Gutsol says the girls don’t know who detained them but suppose it was officers of KGB and police. Gutsol added the activists do not answer the phone number they called from.

For CityArtLab we projected one night only in Public Space, it was at Y Galley during the renovation of the Wine Bar. The video projected was Bela - Monument of Time. Layers of Memory.

Also one should not forget the concept of internet as an extended public space. For people in Minsk this is a way of sharing and getting information from the rest of the world.

GHOST BIKE MINSK

The first Ghostbike in Belarus has been placed at the ring road by CityArtLab. Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street.

Today (dec 19th) in Belarus's capital Minsk, an Australian Journalist, Kitti Green (videographer), was detained by Belarus officials for filming/participating in a FEMEN protest near the KGB headquarters. The protest itself is quite extraordinary. FEMEN (Ukrainian) activists dressed themselves as Belarus's oligarch, Alexander Lukashenko. They even managed to find a girl who was willing to shave her head in a fashion similar to Lukashenko's, and one whose resemblance to Lukashenko is quite uncanny (see right).The protest is held today in remembrance of last years mass protests in Minsk regarding the disputed re-election of Lukashenko. Since the protests, many people are still being held in prison. FEMEN activists held up signs calling for the freedom for political prisons and solidarity for Belarus citizens. >>>

Taken out of time. Taken out of context.
Lost and forgotten. Erased. Indifferent. Unapproachable.

At first I could not understand what was wrong, but something was really different in minsk in comparison to the time when I left it last time (march 2010). The feeling in the city, the very space has changed dramatically, but in a way that you do not see or sense it at once.. it is something in the space that I could not connect to or recognize that made me to question “what is different here, why”… The space of Minsk city gets empty. It gets devastated.

As of 1 August 2011, 674 newspapers and 665 magazines were published in Belarus. More than two thirds of them are private. There were 163 radio broadcast stations and 78 television broadcast stations in Belarus. 24 radio stations and 49 TV broadcast stations are private.

The majority of public radio stations is run by the local authorities.

There are 30 FM radio stations in Belarus, including Radius FM, Radio Unistar (Belarusian-German media project), Europe plus and others.

The target audience of the Belarus radio station are foreigners interested in local events. The radio station airs programs not only in Belarusian and Russian, but also in English, German, Polish, French and Spanish.

There are 5 national TV broadcasters in Belarus: the First National Channel, Lad TV Channel, ONT TV Channel and international satellite channel Belarus TV.

The broadcasting of International satellite channel Belarus-TV was launched in 2005. The programs of the channel are transmitted via Express-AM22 and Galaxy 19 satellites.

Too bad but we just found out about this project after our arrival back to Sweden. It would have been amazing to get someone from there to interact with CityArtLab Minsk. Very similar project but focusing on Architecture instead of Art. Architectural festival "Minsk-2011", and within it - a round table on which one of the best people in the city decided what to do with Minsk >>>

November 3 at the Palace of Art hosted a round table on "The creative community of Minsk: creative heart of our city," where the action team, consultants, urban development, the guests XI National Festival of Architecture "Minsk-2011", as well as invited representatives of business and creative circle trying to figure out whether there is a chance to be creative in Minsk city, and whether the city space, which would be a creative cluster. The latter implies under a closed (or open) space in which the community interacts creatively oriented businesses. This round table was the starting point in the process of finding and creating an interesting creative space in the capital.

NEW TENDENCIES

Certain parts of the centre of the city are sold to foreigninvestors. Some of the buildings are historic once hence this they will be demolished for a "revitalization" of the area. And to help adjust the major budget crises.

One example is part of Yanka Kupala street, which has recently been sold as part of the buildings going down is The Museum of the History of the Second World War at the site a new hotel will be built facing October Square.

The building to be demolished is located directly behind the metrosign in this photograph.

A big THANK YOU to Y Gallery for Contemporary Art for the first 10 days of the project. Now the interesting part starts for us what will happen at the gallery after our departure? Will there be response to any of our suggestions or will there be other roundtables/workshops? Will there be a connection with theatre scene? With architects? With other type of organizations? Will the new audience come back? Is Y Gallery a hub for transfusion of disiplines in refining the future?

Vita left this morning for a short stop in Vilnius. Ira, Carolina and Anna Viola took the same flight to Stockholm.

Suggested topics for the duration of the project in Minsk are sent to the gallery
Invite different organizations and ask them what they think art could do for their mission. Sort of to continue the discussion on art and society this could be done in mini round table format.

The current state of your everyday life in Minsk is very different from my last visit to Minsk. There is more tension in the gallery space and amongst people... What would you say is different and how can this difference be described and in this process be part of projects that could support you in one way or another to help you recreate what once was. Please know I do think you are doing a fantastic job by remaining open.

What is contemporary cultural heritage. Could it assist to make the art scene stronger in Minsk and beyond to talk about cultural heritage instead of social art practice.

Public Projections Minsk, The temporary public site for independent messages from Belarus to Sweden. The site is on a centrally located street with bars, boutiques and cafes in Gothenburg. The projections cant due to technical limitations have sound. I talked about this with Valentina the last night.

Ira and Anna Viola walked on each side of the Independence Ave they were asked to do this by a theatre director, Evgeniy Korniag, who came to the dinner about life in Minsk. He and Masha filmed with one camera each. The work is a collaboration between Korniag, Anufireva and Hallberg. More will be posted about the performance. Video will be released in January 2012.

The president’s message is theborder separating one life period from the next. Built as informational –symbolic matrix: native Kremlin, native flag and kind ruddypresident’s face. It is part of us – part of our inner tradition. As a Pavlov’sdogs we start drink champagne only after president’s blessing. Without this wecan’t start new year and lost in time.

Telling about informationconsumption on informational language you can break iconic shapes ofKremlin, flag, chimes and read these messages in new way. The president’sspeech cut and combined on the principle of collage, gives space for newreading of it. Informational flow covers the screen and gives opportunity tofeel this huge informational volume which penetrate in us. Volumewhich makes us believe.

OCTOBER REVOLUTION FACTORY

December 5th, 30 minutes of standing in front of The October Revolution Factory in Minsk, Belarus. Three pink metro coins in each hand a symbol of inflation and crowd controll. In the back photographs of people in business suits. The suit Anna Viola Hallberg wears is from a jewish man in Brooklyn, NY. The fold up on right leg holds a coin. And the inside of the suit is torn. Due to inflation one can only buy two tokens at a time. In each hand here three coins are placed to represent the new regulation in public space - only groups of people are allowed. The law is not enforced unless something additional is affecting the situation.

CREATING UNFRIENDLY SPACE

Improvisation/Performance by Carolina Falkholt & Ira Anufrieva (and Anna Viola Hallberg).

Used as a metaphor for low civil courage - hence obvious state of Ira Anufrieva no one interrupted the performance. People remained a semi audience, being passive in the response. A very unfriendly space was initiated by Carolina Falkholt (on amp) but no one came to the assistance of Ira Anufrieva who literary did hide. This improv did not have this instruction or "scrip" it was announced as a shared performance by the two of them. At a cue the sound was cut. Anna Viola Hallberg entered the space and walked around the center curtain while giving a reflection over the experience.

The moderator of the dinner Vita Dumchyute took over and initiatied the dinner. After about 15 minutes Ira Anufrieva re-entered the space, now the site of a dinner and stated the emotions she experienced. The question remained; why do we not more often interact in unfriendly spaces.

After another 15 minutes Carolina Falkholt reentered the space. First to join the dinner, she was not greeted by the dinner guests.

The audience was the select group of the dinner in addition to some people who were curious about the topic of the conversation.

The the atmosphere turned in to a friendly space again during the dinner. The main topic for the night was taken into consideration "Art in Public Space". Starting with a recap of art in public space in Belarus from 1980-2011. Then moving on into suggesting interventions that can take place beteen December 7th and 9th by the CALM collective.

In Minsk Belarus Hallberg & Anufrieva made a tribute to Marina Abramovic and Ulay's performance Light-Dark (1977). It was performed at Y Gallery For Contemporary Art at 7 pm on December 5th 2011. This was the opening performance of the public reception of CityArtLab Minsk. The space only accommodated 50 people outside the gallery a group of about the same size were wating. The theme of fear and secure/insecure is at the present highly relevant in Belarus both in the private and public sphere.

Anna Viola Hallberg have asked for this text to be read in conjunction with the opening speech as she will be absent due to performance.

“This is a process based project where we as visiting artists explore the city from different sources. It might be that the work we produce here is informed, or will be, by what you share. The act of thinking and critically explore is here a shared process which we have transformed in to art works. What we share during this week is work in progress, it can be part of a photographic series, an unfinished graffiti piece, the blogg or documentation from a performance – the central aspect is art in public space. For the opening night there will also be live interaction from the core members of this temporary collective. We have traveled here from Gothenburg, Stockholm and Moscow to meet up with with the local scene.

This project was originally carried out in the city of Mariestad in 2011, a city where I was born the project then reached from July 4th to October 22nd. How ever I have not lived there since 1987 so it was a true exploration for me as well, but my family is strongly connected to the city and this was very helpful for the process. Here in Minsk we have one member who know the city really well this creates a similar set up. In the city of Mariestad CityArtLab became three different exhibitions in a temporary kunsthalle with 5 meter ceiling and 170 square meter space on the ground floor and 135 on the second floor. This was located in a vacant warehouse in the very center of the city – a forgotten space. It was an active exploration with international art students for one month, then after that it was more targeted towards the citizens and tourists of the city. For the original opening we did have the great privilege of having visitors from Y-Gallery of Contemporary Art and four of the three members you see here in the CALM collective also were part of CityArtLab Mariestad. The process there was set up a bit differently, Vita will shortly tell you about the program “Shaping The City” she participated in together with 17 other art students held at CityArtLab. For me this was important for a successful project, to have people coming in with a fresh perspective of the city. The 4 week class was a format developed together with the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at University of Gothenburg.

The space here is to be regarded as a artist studio and much of what you see is work in progress developed after only 4 days in the city. Other work is here as it connects the process in the two cities.

Please come back for the artist talk on the 8th and you will get a more in depth presentation of all of us as well as the concept. This is my third visit to Minsk and there is something about this city – I just cant let go of it.”

RAIN EMBRACES THE CITY

Rain, rain and rain on and off for the last couple of days This very morning of the opening its still raining. We had luck during the Crafivim day no rain for the duration of the out door actions. It will be hare for Carolina to stand out in the cold and damp to do her graffiti project HANDS DOWN MINSK. Same for Ira and Anna Viola who will perform outdoors today. Vita has decided to do an intervention at the opening and it will be indoors.

PUBLIC SPACE

We are working under harsh conditions with all types of limitation. For instance there is a law saying that you can not be more than three people in a group. On the other hand you do see people walking in groups bigger than that. So its more like if there is something about that group that is not inline with the conditions then that is a good excuse to limit the presents. This also prevents from spontanious actions as well as planned one are made impossible. So no demos, no clapping, no performance.... Also you may only buy 2 tokens at a time for the metro due to inflation rate.

CALM works with the sphere concept of public space including physical, emotional and intellectual space.

WORK - WHAT CAN BE DONE

Today we started BELA - MONUMENT OF A TIME, it is informed by the first days of work but it also connects back to CityArtLab Mariestad, the claping and fuprematizm.

"These abstract shapes appear on the walls due to the destruction of "indecent" inscriptions, graffiti, wall art traces graphomaniacs. Color Scheme-fu prematicheskih murals are very diverse, they are always "slightly" different from the main wall color, there are a wide range of tone. There are similar rectangles and squares in almost every house, building and institution, and especially in those houses where there is an arch. In the arches, and are the best examples are fuprematicheskih compositions, overlapping one another. This is a "monumental" art is absolutely massive, popular character and a moving, living nature and origin of existence. In the modern Belarusian architecture, especially the last 20 years, when the exterior painting has lost its existence, there was an imitation of monumental painting in the form of fuprematizma." >>>

The big question is what performance can we do? The gallery directors & curators are now in a session to decide what can be done during the week.

The planning goes on we are talking to a lot of people about what is going on in Minsk and also in Belarus in general. About the disaster in Chernobyl and how it still causes turmoil for people. We also talk about public space (physical, emotional, intellectual). This process based project is very dependent of the interaction with people here in the city. We have had the great oppertunaty to have lots of visitors the first day we the space did get charged in a good way. Yesterday we got invited to a screening of a film about Belarusian artists living in Germany. The film was not really about their art work but rather about who they now think of the country.

CHARGING THE SPACE

In the morning we went to the bank to get Belarusian rubel. Next stop was the grocery store down the street. Then it was time to register our arrival 18000 paid to a bank prior to going to the office. During the time in the taxi and the waiting time we kept talking about the plans for the week. We will try to redo the wall outside the gallery or as a back up return to Graffiti Club after talking to the manager. If we can make the wall outside the gallery that will be ready for the Public reception on the 5th. It will all be documented and the film will be screened at the opening. Part of todays research included where to get material, paint, spraycans, wood, fabric but also to locate one more projector and a place to do printouts.

PAINTING @ GRAFFITI CLUB

Tonight there will be a live painting session at Graffiti Club in Minsk. Now at 5 pm we are planning it at Arlanda Airport.

We were the very last ones get our medical insurance at the airport. A kind man helpt us as we did not have change. 10 days costed 5 Euro per person. At the other side of customs Anna Christorsedova (curator of Ygallery) and her two friends waited for us. They took us over to the location of Graffit Club in the outskirts of Minsk an area with blockbuildings. Carolina kept saying "Its so dark here" - only few lights were on in windows this sunday night and the streets were pretty dark too.

The party was at its peak when we got there. The live painting session that we spoke about could not happen. It might be that Carolina will return and paint or we decide on some other palce. We heared the screaming and sounds of happy people as we stepped out in the streets.

The special night at Graffiti Club was the three year celebration of L-Party. Its held in a basement of a former cantina. From the outside it is not at all visible. After entering the glass doors on the right hand side you have a metall door. Outside the space you have un uniformed gards that will not let you in unless you are pre approved. In the same lobby there is a glassbooth with a uniformed gard. The lobby also holds the bathrooms for Graffiti Club. Entering the metall door you walk in to an "alternative" sphere. It could be a small bar pretty much anywhere in the world... The walls are painted with everything from a big rat playing a contrabass to some cartoon looking figures and then scribbeling. One could assume that the graffiti is perhaps more talking about the allowing attitute then talking about a contemporary graffiti scene. As for L-party it was a look a like Daryl Hannah fom the movie Splash where she is a mermaid doing a striptease on the counter by the stage after an introduction of some lokal famous dragqueen. The bar did not sell that many mixed drinks that night it was draft beer and bottles of vodka on the tables. For us it was an excellent time to catch up with old friends and invite people over to the CityArtLab studio at Y-gallery. It was also a good night for Marsha, Ira, Carolina and Anna Viola too hook up and make plans for the week.

Today Carolina Falkholt & Anna Viola Hallberg leave for Minsk. Anna Viola started her trip 7.07 this morning on the island of Brännö at the Swedish west coast. At 2 pm Carolina and Anna Viola meet at Arlanda to have a planning session for the perfomance that takes place tonight at Club Graffiti in Minsk if they can make it from the airport to the club in time before the closing at 11 pm. Ira is already in Minsk waiting for them. Vita arrives from Moscow on the 3rd by train.

Its Carolinas first visit to Minsk, Anna Viola exhibited once before at Y Gallery for Contemporary Art. Its her third visit since 2009. Ira grew up in Minsk but now lives in Stockholm. Ira, Vita, Carolina and Anna Viola worked together this summer at CityArtLab in Mariestad, Sweden.

У пачатку снежня галерэя сучаснага мастацтва “Ў” ператаварыцца ў часовую эксперыментальную творчую лабараторыю, у якой разам з мастакамі і прадстаўнікамі арт асяроддзя з Швецыі, Расіі і Беларусі будзе магчыма паразважаць над пытаннямі мастацтва ў публічных прасторах, узаемадзеяння паміж гарадской прасторай і жыхарамі горада, сацыяльна-арыентаваных культурніцкіх праектаў.
Праект CityArtLab быў ініцыяваны у 2011 годзе шведскім мастаком і куратарам Аннай Віёлай Халберг (Anna Viola Hallberg) . Першы этап праекта быў рэалізаваны ў чэрвені гэтага года ў невялікім шведскім мястэчку Марыестад. Напрацягу месяца група з 20 студэнтаў творчых ВУЗаў з ўсяго свету сумесна з жыхарамі горада распрацоўвала стратэгіі крэатыўнага і культурніцкага развіцця горада, развіцця творчага патэнцыяла гараджан (літаратурныя і тэатральныя акцыі), вырашэння пры дапамозе разнастайных арт-практык надзённых праблем дадзенай мясцовасці.

Да ўдзелу ў Мінскай лабараторыі запрошаны ўдзельнікі шведскага праекта: куратар і мастак Караліна Фалкхолт, перформер Ірына Ануфрыева (Швецыя/Беларусь), мастак Віта Даймчуйце (Расія) а таксама беларускі фатограф і філолаг Марыя Хрусталёва.

THE COLLECTIVE

This is a segment of a 50 meter mura from Mariestad, Sweden produced during CityArtLab. The wall belongs to one of the companies (a sport store) in the block. It faces the train tracks. One of the entery points to the city. The mural is on one of the more central locations and has become very popular by the citizens of Mariestad as well as visitors. During CityArtLab there was an international art student program for one month with the mission to explore public space and trace the identeties of the city. Students came from Belarus, Russia, Sweden, The US, Colombia and Singapore.

CITY ART LAB GOES MINSK

The nature of public space in contemporary society is changing.

A temporary art collective is formed and will work with negotiations of public space with the gallery as studio, CityArtLab was initiated in 2011 by Swedish artist & Curator Anna Viola Hallberg. It was originally carried out in the city of Mariestad, for the month of December the collective will have Minsk as its base and artists from Belarus, Russia and Sweden will work side by side with the general public with art practice that is socially based focusing on sustainable aspects of life in Minsk.
